24 Hour
Fitness Center – A Portfolio of a Thriving Fitness
Progression
People nowadays have a huge variety of
fitness clubs they can join to work
their bodies into shape. There are multiple different
types of clubs: such as privately owned clubs, mini chains, or
very huge chains that appear all over the country. 24 Hour
Fitness centers would fit this "huge" chain category. 24 Hour
Fitness center is a giant health club which began as a
single health club and grew into one of the country's largest
privately-held fitness chains. You will find both men and women
in this club, so womens fitness can be done at these types of
clubs.
How it all
began
It began as a small single health club in
1983 and grew into a fitness giant with over 16,000 employees.
It is headquartered in northern California and at its present
time, has over 3 million members with locations in four
countries. 24-Hour Fitness has a five year plan to create over
1000 more fitness clubs around the world.
24Hour Fitness is extremely successful
because it has the ability to remain open 24 hours a day, seven
days a week. There are not many clubs that have the employee
power to stay open that long. This gives 24Hr Fitness a big
opportunity to expand their customer base. Several other
fitness chains are trying to incorporate the "open at all
hours" routine to boost their profits and accomodate the
customers who like to come in at either really late hours or
extremely early hours so they can come at their
convenience.
Over the years, 24 Hour Fitness centers
has gained notoriety for achievements outside their fitness
chain. They were the sponsor of the United States Olympic team
in 2004 and they teams up with NBC to create the TV show, "The
Biggest Loser". The object of the show was use diet and
excercise to help people lose weight. Contestants worked in
teams to lose as much as possible as a total amount.
Controversies
24 Hour Fitness has had problems to go
along with their enormous success. A lawsuit against them was
brought up in 2005 that they were performing illegal business
procedures. It was cited that the club charged members even
after their contracts expired or were cancelled. They did not
perform the proper font fomratting for their contracts in these
procedures.
In late 2006, 24 Hour Fitness settled the
lawsuit by granting the complained customers either $30 in cash
each or a free 30 day pass to the club.
Currently, 24 Hour Fitness is going
through a lawsuit filed against them in 2006. This lawsuit
describes how the club continued to take money out of their
customers bank accounts and credit cards after their contracts
expired and the customers notified the company that they wanted
to cancel their membership.
