Cardio in this case is shortened cardiological, so it relates to the heart, and means very simply aerobic exercise. Aerobic training use the muscles for a rather extended time; make the heart work more to get the blood going faster than usual so the body tissues utilize oxygen as fuel in burning carbohydrates and fat. For many individuals habitually doing aerobic training, a home exercise room of fitness equipment elliptical style, some light gym fitness equipment or workout equipment is the way to go. However, many people prefer simple brisk walking, slow running, paddling or two-player sports like table or lawn tennis.

Repeated aerobic training benefit the individual in several ways:

• Develops the breathing muscles for better air flow in and out of the lungs. It gives the body greater oxygen levels and better blood constitution via higher amounts of red blood cells.

• Enlarges and builds up the heart tissues, improving pumping efficiency and blood movement while lowering the resting heart rate. This is called aerobic conditioning and is the desired effect of aerobic training, thus the label cardio. This also boosts blood circulation to lower blood pressure and improves the cardiovascular condition.

• Lowers overall stress and enhances mental health, including lower depression vulnerability.

• Increases bone development and thus lowers the risk of osteoporosis.

• Lowers such as diabetes, stroke, some cancers and viral ailments like flu and colds.

• Opens up the blood vessels by lowering bad cholesterol (LDL: low density lipoprotein) levels and raises those of good cholesterol (HDL or high density lipoproteins).

However, aerobic training to be effective must have minimums, particularly of exercise and regularity. Professionalsrecommend twenty minutes of exercise should be done at minimum of three times a week. Else it will produce no effect on the body as any gains were obtained from the exercise will be shed in the no-exercise intervals.

A form of aerobic exercise very famous in the past decades is the aerobics, group exercises involving rapid steps and body movements led by an instructor and done freestyle or arranged in accordance with the beat of music, making it more enjoyable in the process. This was distinctly loved by women, especially when celebrities like Jane Fonda, Judi Sheppard Missett and Richard Simmons promoted it through videos and television shows. A lot of aerobics salons use full-length mirrors to allow the trainees to see if what they are doing is correct, much like training rooms for ballet dancers and other performers.

Among the other popular forms of aerobic exercise are tennis, jogging, badminton, tae bo which incorporates the motions in martial arts, and lately, the NIA or non-impact aerobics, a.k.a. neuromuscular integrative action, which avoids injuries from more strenuous aerobic exercises.

Aerobic training is intended to improve and build up the body through regular, non-srtrenous training which forces the muscles to give up their accumulated energy substances for oxydation. It is not designed for rapid muscle development of the no-pain, no-gain kind. Thus there are at all times aerobic exercises for all, at any age, at any condition.
